School Fuel, the Novato Foundation for Public Education, is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation formed in 2003 to develop a strong and long-lasting education foundation that will support and enrich the education available to all students in Novato public schools. The founders started from a shared premise that a vital public school system is essential to a healthy community. School Fuel supports public education in Novato by raising funds for programs essential to a well-balanced, stimulating and quality education. School Fuel serves as the primary district-wide nonprofit fundraising organization for the Novato Unified School District, and works in partnership with the schools, parents and local businesses to identify and support programs that benefit all students in the district.
The formal mission of School Fuel is “to support and enrich the education available to every student in the Novato Unified School District by raising funds, encouraging volunteerism and increasing community awareness of student and district needs.” The group of women and men who first met to explore the idea of starting an education foundation for Novato went through a lengthy process of fact-finding, learning from other school districts, and meetings with community stakeholders before reaching that mission statement and agreeing on the form that School Fuel would take.
